Galganov's Easy Recipe for Great
Shepherds Pie!

To make this Shepherds Pie recipe you will need:

  • a 20 cm * 28 cm (8" * 11") chafing dish
  • a cooking spoon
  • a pot (to boil your potatoes)
  • a pan (for frying the meat)
  • measuring spoons
  • a knife + cutting board (to dice the garlic and onions)
  • a potato masher

The required ingredients for this Shepherds Pierecipe are:

for the potato crust:

  • 7 - 8 medium potatoes
  • salt (to salt the water)
  • 2 eggs
  • oil, margarine or butter

for the filling:

  • 500 grams (a little over a pound) of ground meat
  • fat for frying
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 3/4 tsp pepper

Method I (crust):

  1. Boil potatoes in generously salted water.
  2. Drain potatoes and mash with eggs and fat (margarine, oil or butter). Add enough fat to create a nice, smooth potato
     

Method II (filing):

  1. In a large pan, heat oil
  2. lightly fry garlic and onion
  3. add meat and fry until done
  4. add pepper (to taste) while frying
  5. add paprika
  6. mix ingredients well
Method III (assemble + bake):
  1. create a crust by lining the bottom and sites of the chafing dish with potato
  2. cover bottom with meat
  3. create a second layer with the cream corn
  4. top of the pie with a crust made from the balance of the potato
  5. lightly sprinkle top with paprika (for colour)
  6. Preheat oven to 160 c (350 f)
  7. Bake shepherd's pie until potato turns golden brown.


  Shepherd's pie takes from 1 1/2 to 2 hoursin the oven.

Tips & Tricks:
  • Salt the potato water well - you can prepare the balance of the meal without salt. A great way to reduce salt in the dish.
